After a series of small incisions are made in the abdomen and the camera and instrument-bearing arms of the robot are inserted, the abdomen is inflated with gas. The colon is then moved away from the kidney, and the fat covering the kidney is trimmed away to expose the kidney surface. Next, blood flow to the kidney is temporarily halted to prevent bleeding while the tumour is cut out and the remaining kidney tissue is sutured together. After the kidney is reconstructed, its blood flow is restored and the kidney is carefully inspected to ensure there’s no bleeding.
The operating surgeon is seated a few feet away from the surgeon operating the console, the robotic instrument is controlled by the surgeon in real-time with highly accurate movement scaling. The robotic surgeon controls 2-3 multi-jointed robotic instruments to perform the tasks of dissection, cauterization, cutting and suturing. Also, the surgeon controls a stereoscopic lens which provides a 3D, high definition image of the body. Once the tumor is extracted from the kidney, it is immediately kept within a plastic sack which is later removed entirely at the end of the operation through an end of one of the current abdominal cut. The kidney hole is then closed with stitches and surgical glue and the blood supply to the kidney is restored. A small duct is left at the end of the procedure, exiting one of the keyhole incisions. Finally, the piece of mass is removed from the stomach through the plastic sack and the skin holes are closed using plastic surgery techniques to minimize the scares.
