Consultant in Uro-Oncological surgery:
- Bradford Teaching hospital is a designated cancer centre serving a population of 1 million in West Yorkshire region. As the network lead, I am regularly involved in the multi-disciplinary team meetings, deciding the management plan for all new cancer diagnosis for the hospital as well as all complex malignancy patients for the network
- In the last 6 years I have been the lead for uro-oncology, clinical director for urology, audit, research and clinical governance. During this time I have been involved in stream-lining the uro-oncology pathways, TRUS biopsy protocols as well as establishing a regular audit cycle with an audit being presented every month with 2 audits per year from each sub-speciality.
- My aim as the speciality lead for Bradford Urology has been to deliver an objectively measurable high quality service with the patients experience at the heart of all the implemented measures.
- In order to address the first objective, all the specialist cancer work is regularly audited. The outcomes from prostate cancer surgery are on par with published literature and have been presented at regional and International meetings. The short term outcome data for radical cystectomy (mortality rate of 4% in the last 4 years) currently appears to be better than the internationally accepted 90 day mortality rate of 7%. I was awarded the best poster prize at the European Urology conference in 2011 for presenting long-term outcome data from prostate cancer surgery at Bradford hospital. Neo-bladder reconstruction is considered as the ideal treatment option for patients following radical cystectomy. I have re-started this programme for patients in our network.
- I have lead on the Robotic programme for Bradford trust right from the stage of business plan to its successful implementation across the whole of uro-oncological operations. We were the first team north of London to carry out robotic radical cystectomy and currently only centre offering robotic nephron sparing surgery for early kidney cancer in Yorkshire region.
- The National patient experience survey (2014) conducted by UK government department of health ranked Bradford urology cancer services within the top 20% Nationwide in majority of categories assessed.
